D1 Screen black. How do I fix it?

Hey when I turn on one of them, the blacklight is on, but there is no M symbol. I can't see anything. Then it loads into Android, but its completely black. The haptic still works though. I have no idea how to remedy this.

I did do a custom bootloader, so I thought that might be why, but I don't think so if it still boots into Android. The buttons light up too. I think it might be dead. My friend borrowed it, and he may have been messing around with custom roms, but thats no reason that it would die, he said it happened suddenly. Anyone have any tips?

From the posts I've seen about this problem, usually the digitizer is bad. And the only way I've seen people fix it is to replace it.
