I dont want to activate it, is there a way to bypass the start up screen like the droids used to do by touching all the corners?

I'm not sure because I don't have a nexus but wouldn't powering it up without the sim card let you use it without activating it?

Because as many on here are, I am familiar with functions and solutions of several Android phones. Being on the rescue squad, there are several reasons why I may post in a section other than a phone I am most familiar with. One is that it will often bump the post so that others will notice it and post their ideas. As with the op's problem, many solutions are the same for all android phones so there would be no reason for me to ignore it. It is what DF is all about... helping each other where we can.
