Noob question about LTE

I am on VZW and looking to upgrade in the coming months. I am interested in LTE but want to make sure that an LTE phone will also work on older 3G networks.

I work in NYC -- that area will be LTE soon. I live in a rural area where LTE won't arrive for a while.

An LTE device will work on 3G - A 3G device will not work with LTE - hopefully they start getting these mythical LTE devices to the public soon - I would like to have one, unfortunately I don't live in an LTE area
