droid 2 global came with sim unlocked i think

so i bought a droid 2 global off some guy who was upgrading and recently turned ina phone for a insurace swap out. So i effectively got a brand new refurb. there is a sim in the slot it is a vodaphone one.. nothing was on it, but i can read and write to it, so my question is how do i know if it is unlocked. is that definitive being able to read and write from it or is that always enabled. Well let me know.....

and the unlock code is stored on phone not sim

If you stick a different carrier SIM into it and it works = unlocked otherwise it asks for unlock #.
