Last week Motorola started sending out invites for an upcoming soak test for a new update of Android. They did not clearly state that this would be their build of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but being that Motorola has been one of the quickest OEMs around to get the latest version of Android on their phones this idea wasn't much of a stretch. Motorola's David Shuster posted some clarification on Google+. This is indeed an initial test run of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Moto X Pure.

Most updates from OEMs come out in batches. This is to prevent all phones in existence from going haywire if there is some sort of major issue in the update. With soak tests if there is a major issue it is quarantined to the few that took the soak test. It can then be reported back to the OEM who can fix the issue then rerelease a test build until a stable build is ready for the masses. Below is David's official statement.

There have been a couple reports of a Marshmallow “soak test” that has started for Moto X 2015 Pure Edition. Just want to make it clear that we have NOT started a formal “soak test”. We have started a small TestDrive for the Marshmallow upgrade on Moto X 2015 Pure Edition. We will be conducting these tests for the next couple of weeks. Pending the feedback during this test cycle will determine the timing of a full soak test.
