Status Bar Icons Question

Can anyone tell me what the little red ball icons are in the status bar? They have a number that is in the center and that number changes from time to time. I have a Motorola droid.

Is there a source for figuring out what all the little icons mean that pop up?

Pull down on the notification bar to see all your notifications in detail. It should tell you what program created the notification.

Its how many multiples of that type of icon there are, it annoyed me a few times because the number wont show up and its just a red ball. Hitting "clear" in the drawer will get rid of it.

I've only seen it when I'm updating the apps from the market. When there's more icons than that will fit in the bar, the number represents how many icons there are beyond what is visible.
