Call me stupid, but I can't for the life of me figure out the meaning of the second icon that looks like a gear with the letter "a" in . Help!?

I believe it's auto brightness but not 100% sure since I don't have a D3.

Yep, your right. Its auto-brightness. When it has the "a" in the middle, that means its on "auto".
