Unless I'm misunderstanding this, it looks like we'll be seeing a GB-based MIUI for the D1 very soon. Mark Huk is on the private beta tester's group and recently tested v1.3.16 and spoke about it on miui-dev.com. Here's what he had to say (pay attention to the part I bolded toward the bottom):

Hi everyone,

I’ve been lucky to have tested this weeks private BETA 1.3.16 and there is some bugs, these bugs have been reported back to the developers via the Developer area on the MIUI.cn forums.

Things you can expect this week!

- HTC Desire HD next to receive Gingerbread 2.3.3
- HTC Evo and Droid Incredible to get unofficial port to 2.3.3 (pending some final issues)
- Phone UI (Slide to answer updated and soon to be customisable)
- New UI introduced for Contacts.apk
- Background support added for Phone.apk (Preparation for UI 3 (Orchis))

Bugs wise there is White font color through the entire UI, this is a side-effect of the on-going UI 3 updates and I have mentioned this to the development team as an issue of usability for day to day functionality.

Other things I can let you know about:

Milestone and Desire are working well with 2.3.3 updates from what I can see in the developer forum. Nexus One has been delayed due to some A2SD / ext issues and this is why we’re not seeing the Nexus One up next with Gingerbread 2.3.3.

More news when the changelog is released on Friday.

Thanks

Mark

Sounds promising! :) Link to Mark's post: MIUI 1.3.18 News – MIUI Developers

Here's another copy/paste of some ongoing comments from the same link above. If you don't think your phone will like a Gingerbread base, hold on to the 1.3.11 install zip as it may be the last Froyo version available.

Mark (if I'm not mistaken) is not a Miui Dev but speaks/reads/writes Chinese and is one of (if not the main) translator of Miui from Chinese to English. He does his thing before Tp4bama does his.

    Thanks for the answer Mark,
I understand this but I mean in this week update, will devices like N1 (which are not on 2.3 yet) get this week the Phone.apk and Contacts.apk new UI?

Not sure, the development aim is to get everyone onto 2.3.3 and MIUI Orchis UI so I am doubtful more development will be continued for the 2.2 tree.
      Thanks,
      Mark

My phone loves GB...running CM7 right now.

You are correct, Mark is not a dev. All the developers are in China. Mark just translates/provides language packs. Then other developers, such as our very own 'bama, port them to unofficial devices such as the D1.

As far as the comments, it's been stated before all the MIUI devices are going to 2.3.3, however, the point of my post was to point out that apparently the Milestone port (which our D1 port is based off of) has already been switched to a gingerbread-base, at least in private beta form. That just means we may be getting it sooner than we thought.

Thanks for the follow-up info!

Looks like still a Froyo based release this week and a lockscreen change according to a couple of tweets from tp4bama a couple of hours ago. Sounds like he also has a Thunderbolt on the way so porting Miui to the D1 may not be tops on his list of cellphone tinkering in the future.

Yeah this week is still froyo. And the part about the thunderbolt isnt true, thats prob jamezelle that you heard about getting one.

^^ nice!! hope yu kno tp4bama i meant no disrespect to you - i was merely stating my discontent with MIUI, i know what you do... :) :)

I think he knows we mean no disrespect to him when we talk of Miui issues. It's like someone scanning some playboy images from the magazine (yes, they still put porn on paper) and uploading them for others, on a forum for instance, and somebody pipes up saying "I don't like those images", or "that girl is ugly", etc. We know he didn't create the images/ rom, but I'm sure he knows we do still appreciate his time and effort to get the job done for us to check out in the first place. And most of us do tell him that so I'm sure he knows.

Now that I'm done talking about him as if he isn't here, hey tp4bama, good to hear you're not leaving the D1, yet. While the hardware is still viable, folks moving on to bigger, badder, better handsets will be what spells the end of the D1 heyday. And its been a helluva ride.

I read last night the bootloader is unlocked on the Thunderbolt, and they already have CWM recovery loaded, which opens the floodgates for custom roms and more importantly, kernels. Maybe the industry is going to loosen up like HTC is with this new TB and leave the bootloaders alone so our community can have its fun too. In my mind it hurts their bottom line almost zero and just boost our enthusiasm of their handsets to where we want to tell our friends, "hey get this one and heres what we can do with it", giving the industry a small army of unpaid sales people in return.

Are you confident in the information about the Thunderbolt?
And have you heard similar things about any other newer releases?
