3G going on and off randomly?

Ive noticed the 3G icon in the notification bar has been going disappearing for a few seconds every once in awhile. is this normal? i was trying to watch videos on youtube and on facebook and within half an hour the 3g icon disappeared for a few seconds messing with downloading the youtube vids and loading facebook. Is that common? Ill keep a watch on it and maybe its just my location. I got average 3-4 bars of service as well.

It happens to me quite often and usually going into airplane mode and back out fixes it.
