3G Mobile Hotspot Help

Hello,

I just got a Droid X. I really wanted this phone for the 3g hotspot feature but did not want to pay the $20/month verizon charges.

I would like to hack it, but do not want to risk my expensive phone or my contract with verizon. All I need is to get the 3G internet on my laptop, dont need the five devices.

Can anyone direct how to do this with an app or explain what steps are needed and repercussions of hacking it are?

Any help is appreciated.

You can drop $10 on PDANet or EasyTether, or use their free versions for a slightly crippled e-mail experience.

VZW's 3G hotspot app is going to cost you.

I haven't kept up with the latest hotspot apps, but from what I saw before, you'll have to be rooted. I use wireless tether which is a FREE 3G hotspot app that requires root.

There are a few threads on how to root, just look/search around the forums.

I think someone found a solution a way to tether for free without root.
