3G speed question

I got an unlocked motorola milestone A853 EU model for $135.00, but when I got it, it didnt get 3G in status bar with my AT&T sim card, Upon further research I realized I need the milestone NAM Telus version so I can get 3g with AT&T because that one has same AT&T 3g bands. now I need to decide if I should return it and get the more compatible one, most likely costing around almost $100.00 more. the thing I havent come across on the web is if 3G would make that much of a difference. Does anyone know please?

4g is faster, as long as you stay within the 4g area you should be fine. But if you travel out of 4g range, with no 3g service on your phone, you'll have no internet.
