I just ran a speed test at home which is always slow. Here are the results. What do you think?

Down--- 0.07mbps
Up--- 1.46mbps

The upload speed is decent for a mobile phone. The download speed looks pretty sluggish though, I typically get ~1.3 down.

Did another test
D 0.23mbps
U 0.44mbps

I normally use wifi at home because of this. I live in a rural area but not far from two cell towers. Any suggestions?

Well, if you have WiFi then it doesn't make much sense to get an extender. So Long as you're getting a 3G symbol on your phone I wouldn't waste time worrying about it.

That's what I thought hook. 3G works much faster in the city where I work. Some of the drawbacks living in the boonies.
