Access calendar without setting up gmail acct

Is there a way to access and use my calendar without setting up a gmail account?
I am concerned about gmail security.

What calendar? Your google calendar? That would be a no.
I'm not sure how well your phone would work, if at all, if you don't put in a gmail account.

I am using the phone just fine.
Is there another calendar app that I can use with out having a gmail account?

My biggest fear of setting up a gmail account is security. What fail safe security measures would you recommend?
