Accessing SD card

I am newbie here and appreciate all help. I have a Droid RAZR with an icon at the top stating that my 16GB SD card is almost full. Is there a way to access the card contents and safely remove items or is there a better way to do it?

Also, are there items on the card I should be careful "not" to remove??
