Activating a 3rd party phone...

Hey guys, I've been counting down the days until my "2 yrs." is up so I can save my extra $50 and get a DX...I've seen several threads regarding the great deals you can get at places like Walmart or Dell online...how is the activation/renewal handled when you buy the phone from these places? Do I still have to go to Verizon to activate the phone? As long as I have "backup assistant" can I still retrieve my contacts? Thanks and sorry for the dumb questions...if I can beat the $149 price (including the $100 mail in rebate) I certainly like to.

How WalMart and other third parties work, like BestBuy and such. They do the Instant MIR, so that way you don't have to send off for anything, you get your discount right then and there.

I purchased from Wirefly, got a smokin deal too! They check with VZW to see if your eligible, if so you make your purchase then send you the phone. Depending on shipping method it can be one to several days. When you receive it, they are tracking it and are informed when it is delivered. Once they know you have possession of the phone they disconnect service to your old phone. When that happens you may do the initial programming and connect the new phone at home over the air.
