Additional characters for texting?

Is there a way to add more characters to the phone? I know we can add words, but individual symbols. Such as the temperature symbol

Of you hit the up/shift button when you're on the numbers/symbols it'll give you more characters to choose from. I don't know if you wanted more than that or not.

I know about that. Im saying is there a way to add more without rooting?

I would also like the answer to this question. I can produce hearts with the other input methods such as Simeji, but I want to be able to do it in Swype.

That said, the temp. symbol is the 'F' button if you hold it down for a few seconds.
