Well android started on an alpha and then a beta, which aree essentially test versions. Then as the began releasing system versions they kept up with the alphabet and named their versions after deserts. So first was cupcake, then donut, eclair, and now froyo (which we are currently on) next comes gingerbread, and after that honeycomb, and ostensibly ice cream. All the random system updates we have received over the life of our phones are mostly updates from motorola, htc, samsung that fix bugs and such.
