annoying alert every 15 minutes

My husband got a Motorola XT 270 a few days ago. He hasn't really had time to figure it all out but suddenly yesterday it started making an alert tone - the same as a text message alert - every 15 minutes. We can't figure out what's causing it and we can't make it go away. Anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Go to settings: about phone: system updates. He may be receiving an OTA update.

If that's not it are there any icons on the top left showing?

:welcome: to the Forum. I'm not sure what this is, it sounds to me like he has a calendar event with a reminder every 15 minutes. Check over there, that might be what it is.

If that isn't it then try a simple restart of the phone if you haven't done that already. You can try pulling the battery for 30 full seconds, however I have a feeling that probably won't help since battery pulls rarely do.

He's got something set as a reminder, has to be and he probably didn't realize it when he set it up. If you really can't figure it out then you'll need to do a factory data reset, it should be in the privacy area of the settings. That's about all you can do.

We saw the factory reset but worried that he would lose all his contacts that were copied over from his old phone. He doensn' t have those backed up anywhere.

Before you do the factory reset, go to google.com/contacts and sign in with the phone's account. The contacts should be backing up there automatically, but it doesn't hurt to check.

For anyone with the same problem, it seems to have been the e-mail notification. The default e-mail notification is to play a sound. Unfortunately, my husband gets a bunch of junk mail on his multiple accounts and it makes the tone go off all the time (day and night). Anyway, I went into each e-mail's settings and set the notification ringtone to silent. Now he gets the little e-mail picture on the top of his screen but no tone waking me up all hours of the night. I'm now happy.
