another new droid owner

Hello. Im new as you can guess. Just left the Apple stable after being really let down by the iPhone4, so got myself an HTC Desire. So far so good and I'm searching for apps and stuff that tickle my fancy. Also interested to find out about rooting. Any clues would be welcome, as in how to do it and what the benefits are.
