Another Newb with a Possible Brick

Here's what I did in order....

  • Installed SPRecovery.
  • Created a Backup
  • Install 2.2 Froyo (FRF84B) with root
  • Installed the Market Fix Market_fix_FRF84b.zip
At this point all is well

  • Then I installed Bugless Beast V0.4 FRF84B
Again, all is well.
Then I guess I got greedy.

I decided to to install the Smoked Glass Theme for BB 0.4 which I downloaded to the SD Card.
At this point I think the battery indicator was at 80%.
One of the Smoked Glass posts said I need ROM Manager to do that so I got the free version from the Market.
Went to install SG with ROM Manger and ROM Manager prompts to install Clockwork, which I did.
Now on to installing SG I followed the prompts and I get to Motorola M and after about 15 minutes I'm still on the M.
Tried power button -- Nothing.
So I pull battery and am cycling thru boot loops and every once in a while it boots to a point where it show NO Battery and asks to Connect to Charger. I am constantly getting the connect to charger issue now. In those states were I was able to navigate to the home page I quickly get a system not responding error.
I've tried charger for at least an hour with no luck.

Before the battery went dead (I think), I was able to get into SP Recovery using the power button and X. BUT my attempt at restoring backups (normal or full) were met with errors and my attempt at just doing an Install (which should be the BB0.4 ROM) after clearing data and cache twice was also met with an error.

The only thing I have NOW is a phone in the Motorola Dock plugged into wall outlet and a constant boot loop......

HELP THE NEWB PLEASE !

Sounds like you're close, just don't have the juice. How about running down to the V-store and getting a battery charger, and charge it out of the phone? Then put it and try booting up in to recovery?

Oh, definitely not bricked!

If you're seeing the "M" logo, you are not bricked. Did you reinstall your latest good backup and start over again?

Ok i had a similar problem so i flashed SBF and it still didnt work. I took it to verizon and they sent me a replacement. Its not the battery issue i dont know what it is.

1. How do you flash SBF, or anything else, if you can't get the phone to a point to establish a USB connection?

2. Does a full power batter really matter that much? Do these phones not charge or draw enough power from a PC USB connection?

I'll get a battery charger tomorrow.

Thx

In the serch type in SBF to root and un root. All info is in full detail.

As for the battery when you are flashing an alternate sbf you will hold up on the d pad and push power just until the screen flashes. But the thread should solve your problems.

The phone has to reach a certain point before it "recognizes" a connection and takes a charge. When I was having a similar issue, the light came on for a second and then when out as it was not reaching the point when it would charge.

If you can power up while holding the up direction of the D pad on the physical keyboard, and get the text stating that the battery status is ok and ready to program, that's when you can push the sbf file over.

Here's what you can do....
if you do not have the BB v0.4 on your SDCard currently...
take out your micro SDCard and place it into your PC's SDCard reader (hopefully you have a micro SD to SD adapter) ... then download BB v0.4 to your SDCard root (not in any folder), rename it to update.zip.... place the card back into your Droid..

then with the battery puilled, plug in your USB cable to your Droid, now while holding your X button on your Droid place in your battery...it should boot into your SPRecovery which you said you were able to get into to just prior to your battery dying... then from SPRecovery navigate that Update.zip and flash...it should take...

With the battery pulled and USB connected to PC, up on the D-Pad doesn't do anything. ( I assume not enough power from PC USB).

With the battery pulled, I put in the Moto Dock holding up on the D-Pad and I get a bootloader error message - "Battery Low - Cannot Program"

So it appears much of this is dependent on battery strength.....

I got a battery only charger at Radio Shack and charged battery.

Booted phone with X key and have SPR screens.
Tried to reinstall BB but kept getting the following error:
E: Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblkop1 (no such file or directory)
E: Can’t mount SDCARD.update.zip
Installation aborted.

So I just flashed back to a Stock 2.1 and reactivated.
I was hoping to go back to root but now when I flash SPR
After RSD completes I get stuck at the M with an RSD message
Manually Power Up The Phone. But it won't boot with the power button.
Pulled battery for reboot and again phone is still stuck at the M.

Thought maybe SPR had been flashed so I tried boot with the X key and did procedure to load the BB install file but I get the exact error as above.

So I flashed back to Stock 2.1 and don't know what to do to get root.
Probably time to move to another forum since I'm back up on the stock 2.1

I was so close. Had BB installed and I think that CW screwed up something when I tried to load SG Theme.

OK I'm back at Bugless Beast.

It was a stupid mistake and an easy fix.

MISTAKE ... I was an idiot and renamed the rom on the sd card to "install" instead of "update"

Turns out that when you try to install a file called update from SPR and it can't be found the process corrupts the SD card.

So I got back to the normal phone home page and:
  • Connected phone to USB and copied the SD card files to the PC hard drive
  • Then unmount (Safely Remove Hardware) and turn off the USB connection from pull down.
  • Remove the USB cable from phone
  • In the phones menu go to "Settings" then "SD Card & phone Storage".
  • "Unmount SD card". This unmounts it from the phone.
  • "Format SD card" will then be selectable. Selecting that will format the card and when finished, automatically remount it to the phone so the Droid can use it.
  • Reconnect the USB cable and turn on USB connection and copy back all of the SD card files from the PC.
  • While you're there loaded up BB ROM and named it "update"
  • Unmounted (Safely Remove Hardware) again and turned off the USB connection from pull down.
  • Power Off - Power up with the X.
  • Follow normal steps to install the update.zip and woohoo, back to BB
Thanks to christim and tcrews for their helpful posts.
