Anyone having luck with "night sky" apps?

I've been curious about the various sky apps (Google Sky, SkEye, Star Chart and many more) but they work horribly on my RAZR. Tonight the moon is out in crescent form with a very bright planet next to it. I was curious which one it was so I fired up one of the apps and, just as always, they couldn't help because no matter how I rotated the phone, none brought up even the moon--at least in the direction I was aiming. Plus the sky seemed to shimmy all over horizontally rarely settling in on one spot even though I wasn't moving the phone much at all.

Then I starting wondering if my Otter case was perhaps causing a problem. I'm not entirely sure how the software/phone is determining orientation and perhaps there's something inhibiting it?

Is this typical for a RAZR, typical for all such apps or signs of something wrong?

I've found that unchecking a majority of the options on the left side of the screen helps the app identify planets quicker.

Google Sky as well as Star Chart work fine for me, but I did have to have the phone replaced to get them to work.

Aha.... Before that did they have trouble in the way I described?

Well it could be the same problem, but for me basically no matter where I pointed I showed North. Also any compass mode did not work and would not change if I moved the phone.
