apex SMS issue?

I've been using the AOSP SMS app on apex. which works perfectly. but lately ive been in the mood for the motorola SMS app. but i've noticed if im using the MOTO sms app and i reply to a text, then lock the screen without closing the text if that person texts me back the notification light doesn't work. it flashes once as the text comes in but thats it and if i unlock the screen to see if the SMS icon is in the notification bar it doesnt show

unless i close each text out after i send a message. which while at work can be annoying.

this happens on both versions of apex

any suggestions?
