App downloads never finish on DroidX

I'm NOT A TECHIE, don't know where to properly post my query but app downloads never finish. This hasn't always been the case, I've had the phone for over 2 yrs, problem is recent. I tried clearing the market cache as advised, no change. Updated a Verizon Apps app. Rebooted by removing battery. No success. I stopped short of also clearing the data--was warned that all files, etc would be deleted. By the way, I can't download the suggested "Droid Forums" app, either.
Any ideas?

Welcome nanfox, loved my DX. Sorry I can't solve your problem. But a reset seems most likely, wipes everything as you know.

Hmm, did you clear the market data along with its cache?
