App or way to utilize Google Maps for land navigation/distance tracking??

I'm preparing for a land navigation test next week, using only map, compass, and protractor. I'd like to test how precise I am by confirming with my phone, if possible.

It'd be helpful if I was able to track distance in meters (would need to be fairly precise to not to more harm than good) as I obviously keep my own pace count with pen and paper. It'd also be nice if I was able to identify the terrain I'm on or around.

Even if I were able to mark my position on a map and it relayed info to me on how many meters I'd traveled, that'd be helpful.

Thanks

I think the MyTracks (My Tracks?) app does this.

It does. MyTracks will GPS track your location very precisely (when outside), it gives you speed, distance (metric or english).

MyTracks can export to GPX or KML, which I understand to be common GPS files (I can upload both to mapmyrun.com) as well as to GoogleMaps.

Like I said, it's very precise, you move over a few feet/meters on a street and it'll know.

Land Nav Assistant

It takes in MGRS points. You can put in your start location and the point you're after. Once you're where you think the point is, you can plot that point to see the distance traveled since the start point. It can also show you if you had a tendency to veer to the left or right.
