App Permissions

I've searched a bit and haven't seen much discussion on the permissions that apps require for installation and use.

For instance, if an app lists Your location (fine GPS location) and Network communication (full Internet access), does that mean it can send my location out at any time?

For the Your messages section below, does that mean the app can read all of my texts? Not sure I understand the need for that.

NFL Mobile has around 90% of those listed below...I don't think Roger Goddell needs access to my texts! :)

Your location
coarse location, fine (GPS) location

Your messages
read SMS or MMS, receive MMS, receive SMS, receive WAP

Network communication
full Internet access

Storage
modify/delete SD card contents

Phone calls
read phone state and identity

Services that cost you money
send SMS messages

System tools
change network connectivity, change Wi-Fi state, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping

Hardware controls
take pictures

--------------------

Under Show/Hide dropdown

Your location
access extra location provider commands

Network communication
view network state, view Wi-Fi state

Hardware controls
control vibrator

System tools
disable keylock, install shortcuts

Your accounts
view configured accounts

NFL Mobile can send you reminder texts...

Yep, it can, and I don't have an issue with that.

What I'd like to know is that when you install the NFL Mobile app, why it needs access to your location, read SMS/MMS, modify SD card contents, read phone state/identity, SEND SMS messages, etc.

Just seems a bit squirrely to me is all, which is why I haven't installed it.
