I just rooted my droid x and wondered is there an app or setting that will stop some of the startup services from starting that I dont use? (like skype and social network stuff)

If you are rooted, then you can purchase Titanium Backup and use that to freeze the apps you don't want/use.

Or you can use root explorer to rename the app's .apk file to .bak in your /System/Apps folder. (Skype.apk becomes Skype.bak, etc.)

I have the free version of titanium backup, do I have to have the pay version to have the freeze option?

I us anttech app manager on my droidx. It works great for me and it's free.

I think freezing an app can be done manually by renaming the apk file but buying titbu gives a nice ui and helps support a dev who puts out a damned useful free app.

Best way to stop startup services from starting is with autostarts it allows you to enable the functions based on application. Such as disable adfree from starting after startup. It lists what things cause applications to auto start and gives you the ability to disable that action.

You can use ES file explorer in place of root explorer. It had too functionality as well as many other functions.
you could also do like me and instead of renaming the apps, just move them to a different directory.
