After reading recent stories about large numbers of free android apps harvesting info like gps and phone number when these are unrelated to the app function, I have become much more security conscious. In fact, I uninstalled almost all of my applications except those with no unneeded permissions. Almost every free app on my phone wanted perms it didn't really need.

I'm interested in a whitelist of free android apps that are guaranteed NOT to harvest or transmit any personal info whatsoever. After my purge of apps, about all I was left with was RealCalc calculator by Brain Overspill and Chess by Aart Bik.

How can I find more apps I can trust?

Some Android apps caught covertly sending GPS data to advertisers is an example of what I'm referring to.

Google says "only install apps you trust" - but how do we figure out who we can trust?
