Apps randomly close without FC

Have had my Droid for 8 months or so, did the whole root and ROM bit, but went back to stock a couple months ago as I had significant stability issues no matter how I set things up.

Recently have started to have some of the same old issues, particularly apps closing without notification. This mostly occurs when the app is launching... for example Dolphin Mini will turn the screen white for a second when I launch it and then immediately close without an FC notification at all. I can launch the app over and over repeatedly with similar results, then try again an hour later and it works fine.

Haven't been able to find any threads dedicated to the topic yet. Any thoughts DFers?

I am having the same problems with a few apps of mine, mainly games though, some games run for 5-10 minutes before closing for no reason with no FC error or anything, hope we find help soon...

Let me know if you find out anything please.

Thanks!

Sounds like a memory issue.. check if you have an app killer running that kill those apps.
The Droid 1 has only 256 mb of ram and those use up quickly. If you have to many things running in the background such as Tango or Whatsapp or anything that is on constantly it eats up memory.

The way to check what is running is through the Running applications menu. If you have a lot of things trying to run at the same time, the OS will kill any new thing you will lunch.. hope this helps..

BTW.. an occasional factory reset helps keep things running smoothly..

U can increase ur vm heap size there are apps that can do this or do it by hand if u know how by editing ur build.prop

Move as many apps as you can out of phone memory to the sd card and you should reduce (but not eliminate) this from occuring.

I have the most internal free that I have had in a while and I seems to be getting worse. I think its at about 33 MB free.

It seems to happen only with a few apps. All 3 Angry Birds editions, weather channel, and power amp are the ones I notice the most.

I have been contemplating a reset but am not sure what I loose. I can't seem to find a good post for that. I have also been thinking about loading a custom rom and I've read its best to reset before that too.

Any help would be much appreciated!

When you reset you will lose everything you have on the phone. Text, call log, apps, and anything else you added. Things on your SD cards (pix, songs,) would be fine. your Google account would restore your contacts. You can back up your app list, there are apps for that on the market.

As far as custom roms, i recommend Sourcery but with to many things running in the background any Rom would give a hard time. Sourcery has great memory management capabilities.

I use Titanium to backup data. I've used it to restore bookmarks so I know at least those are saved! I've also gotten the impression that apps downloaded from the market would be reinstalled.

They would but im guessing some of the apps have a part in the slowliness you are experiencing...

Root and use link2sd and you will free up alot of space. I have about 195mb free at most times. If you use link2sd make 2nd partition fat32 and it will work on any rom you choose.

I still think increasing ur heap size is the easiest thing it's ridiculously easy to do and it can help a lot

i just did that myself to.. not sure i'll notice any difference though as Sourcery has excellent memory management capabilities.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I have been working this whole weekend to get everything working but am having little success.

  • Changing the heap size has not helped at all.
  • I partitioned my sdcard using rom manager choosing fat32 as recommended type for the second partition. However, link2sd cannot create the script to mount the partition. So I'm stuck there till I can find something in one of the forums.
  • I have been attempting to install a new ROM via Rom Manager but cannot boot into CM recovery. I did try flashing SPR, then CM. That did not work. Also tried flashing CM multiple times in a row with now luck. SP recovery works but I haven't had a chance to manually do it yet.
If I don't find anything in the next hour or so, I guess I'll be updating the ROM manually.
