I just got a Droid X and am disappointed at the weakness of the E-mail.

All the other cell phones I have ever had could alert me when new e-mail arrived. A ring tone could be attached to it. Without this it basically makes the phone worthless to me because I communicate a lot via e-mail and many of my e-mails are time sensitive. I need to respond to them as soon as they arrive.

I also could specify how often it polled my e-mail account. Is there any way to accomplish these basic e-mail functions with the basic apps? Are there any decent e-mail apps available?

I use Touchdown, Some like K-9

K-9 Mail it's a free app. does what you want. I tried Touchdown (free trial) but I thought K-9 was better.

The reason I use touchdown is it's 100% integrated with Exchange. The only app to do so.

Interesting; I use the stock email for my Cox account, the Yahoo app for Yahoo and Gmail for, well, Gmail. All have different sounds to alert me to new emails and all give me alerts.

What email accounts are you trying to get alerts too?

Forward all your mail to Gmail. With the updated app you can even reply with another email address.

Your stock app should do this. Have you checked the app's settings thoroughly?

For what type(s) of email accounts?

I use Touchdown
Touchdown's only relevant for Exchange (and a couple of other mail servers) users.

I use the stock email app for several different email addresses, including exchange, and it notifies me whenever I get mail. You can even set different emails to different sounds with the newest version. If you go to your account and press menu, then options, there are all sorts of customization tools.

Sent from my brain, with the help of my Droid...
