Are there different versions of a rooted phone?

Objective:
My phone is acting a bit sluggish and I wanted to do a factory reset to "clean it out". I'll want to root it again so I can finally try this CM7 ROM and see what the fuss is about.

My concerns:
I rooted my Dinc2 a LONG time ago when people first developed the procedure. I didn't know much about it, but I followed the directions and was successful at rooting. I quickly looked through some of the rooting instructions and they seem to be different than what I used when I rooted my phone.

So my question: is a rooted phone just a rooted phone? Are these new ways of rooting just a better way to get where I already am?

Actually, I'm not sure if a factory reset would get rid of root or not. Or if there's a better way to "reformat" my phone without losing root. Unless I need to re-root with current methods to use CM7.
