Atmel, the ARM chipset manufacturer, announced at MWC that they will be collaborating with Nvidia on a new line of large-format Tablet PC's. Interestingly, they will be using Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip along their own custom maXTouch mXT1386 touchscreen chipset. They plan to scale their devices from smartphone size all the way up to 16 inch tablets! Their design will be able to handle high-quality gaming and will be powered by the Android OS.

Here's a quote from SlashGear,
The touchscreen chipset being used can support up to 16 touches at one time and has the industry’s fastest response times and more. “With device entrants from across the PC, mobile, and entertainment space, 2011 is shaping up as the year of the tablet,” said Rhoda Alexander, analyst at IHS iSuppli. “Processing speed and touch performance are key elements of successful design in this highly competitive market. Joint reference designs, such as that provided by the collaboration between Atmel and NVIDIA, can provide a significant design benefit to vendors as they strive to provide faster tablets with improved touch performance and longer battery life.”

Wow! Earlier we wrote about the enormous Acer Iconia Smart Android Phone, coming with a 4.8 Inch screen. Now Atmel is bringing out a sixteen inch tablet PC. I suppose a giant tablet PC seems to make more sense than a 4.8 inch smartphone. What do you think?
