Automatic (?) compass in car dock not on

I've been playing with my Droid 2 for a couple of weeks and recently got a car dock. Of course, when I put the Droid into the car dock, it goes into car dock mode, which includes a button called "My Location". Most of the time that button has an icon which includes a small arrow pointed up. A couple of days ago I noticed that instead of the small arrow, I was getting directional information (North, South, etc.). It was quite handy. Unfortunately, I'm no longer getting that information, and I would like to.
Ironically, when I received the directional information my 3G was OFF! Now that I have turned it on I'm not able to get a compass reading.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get it to work?
