Battery chargers ?????

I have a Razor Maxx and my wife has a X2. Both have shared the same chargers since day one with zero problems. The other day I bought a Motorola XYboard, was told by the Verizon sales rep that it can use the same chargers as the two phones we have (same plug). When I plugged the tablet into the phone charger I get an on screen message that the charger is not strong enough.................when I plug the tablet charger into a phone it chargers but it gets pretty warm. One of the reasons I bought the XYboard over the Samsung was I did not want to have a different charger. Has anyone here successfully used the tablet charger on their phone without causing damage of visa versa?
