Battery problems

I just got my 2nd galaxy nexus, and just like my first one the battery is terrible. I did everything the people at Verizon told me to do to save
Power, and I still have to charge my phone every 6-8 hours it seems. Ive done everything I can think of to save battery.
What's the problem with these phones and how can I get better battery life without getting a bigger battery?

I recently purchased an extended battery by Hyperion off of Amazon.com. $24 for a size 3800mh and I LOVE it! Can easily go all day with the screen brightness set to auto and not even think twice about it anymore.
