Best messaging app? Handcent?

I am currently using Handcent and wanted to know if there are any other messaging options out there. Also, is there a way to modify the stock messaging so the background is black/clear? I am not rooted or any of that stuff...too afraid Ill break my phone, lol.

i second go sms. its easy to customize almost every aspect of it (including background) and its a good replacement app. never had an issue with it.
