best video format and size for playback on RAZR MAXX ?

when converting dvd or .avi files for RAZR MAXX, what format and size works best for playback? Would you convert hi-def 1920 x 1080 to the Maxx' Display resolution of 960 x 540? Would you ever up-convert video of less than hi-def quality? thanks!

Not sure about the exact settings but I use DVD Catalyst and it does a terrific job. It's also fairly cheap.
