Best way to clean a screen protector?

Everyone says just use a microfiber cloth, but that only works if you are only getting finger prints/dust on your screen. What if you get dirt or food residue on the screen. Because as much as it pains me when I'm eating, sometimes I have to answer a phone call.

Is putting water on the actual Droid screen or a screen protector, harmful? Usually I wet the microfiber cloth till its damp and wipe away avoiding the ear piece. The reason why I ask is because I know if you use any cleaning solution, it messes up touch screens bad.

The solvent to use would depend on the specific dirt and the screen protector. However, I've never run into anything that couldn't be cleaned up with water and microfiber. That said, I generally don't handle my Droid when I'm near food.
