Bizarre Eris camera problem

Lately I've noticed a strange tendency where some dark areas in photos taken in normal light get filled in with a lighter color, resulting in a kind of outline effect. It's hard to describe, so I've attached an example picture (no, I don't know what it says). This effect also occurs in landscape shots, where the bits of shadow are similarly affected.

I tested it right now in my room in medium light and couldn't reproduce the effect, and in general it seems to only occur in sunlight and under relatively strong artificial light. But there's also the possibility that the effect has been fixed with the recent major HTC/Android update...I just haven't yet taken lots of pictures since then.

Anybody else have this problem in the past?
