Bootloader message...help...

My husbands phone last night has a bootloader message on it. Its a black screen and it says something like Reloader and use usb to format..he trys to turn it off and turn it back on but nothing happens but that bootloader screen. What in the world does this mean and how can i fix it? PLEASE help.

did he try to root it or did the battery die.

it was on the charger and when he woke up in the middle of the night he looked at his phone and it was off so he turned it back on and the screen says something like reloader and use usb but the phone was working before he went to bed just fine...
