Camcorder Mic Sensitivity

I have filmed vids on my D2 while my friend films with his D1 and his clips always sound much cleaner than mine. We have done the different cameras at the same time and his consistently sounds cleaner and less distorted. As if the mic was a bit hotter in the D2 but too hot so to speak. Anyone have audio isses with their D2 camcorder?
