I have saved text message pictures to my phone, and then added them as an email attachment before. You should be able to long press by the message with the picture in it and then save. It should save to your gallery under downloads.
I discovered that you can long press the photo itself to do one set of things, or you can long press the background (not the picture) to do other things...including forwarding to an e-mail address
