can't delete text message notification

I use Handcent sms and received a text message which shows up in my task bar. After I viewed the message, it still appears in the task bar and, even though I deleted the thread, I can't get it to go away. Any suggestions? Thanks

can you hit clear in the notifivation bar to remove it?
