cant get rid of new message notification or view the message it refers to

This has happened twice now, so I have 2 new notifications that I can't get rid of. I deleted a thread and while it was deleting, I got another message from that person. It deleted that message too, but still had the notification. When I click the notification it goes to a loading screen until I press the home key. I can hit clear but it comes back when I get a new message (it says I have 3 new messages every time now) I don't know how to get rid of it and its very annoying. Is there any way to trick my phone into thinking that I've viewed this message?

I'm using the standard messaging app on my incredible. I might be into trying a different messaging app but not if it don't fix the problem or if It will slow down my phone.
