Can't listen to Google Music and have Navigation open at the same time

Whenever I am listening to Google Music (TuneIn Radio, or any other app that runs in the background) and then open the Navigation app, what ever was running closes.

My guess is that these apps are getting kicked out of memory. Is there any way to keep the two apps I want to use on the road running? I really want to be able to listen to music while I use the navigation app.

I'm using the latest version of CyanogenMod.
