I had to do a factory reset because of an unrelated problem and then I did the update. I feel it was better that way as I have seen no issues so far, but again that is just my opinion and of course ymmv.
Actually I used MattLGroff's Utility v 1.71 to update to the official right as it started rolling out because I didn't want to wait for it to come to me.
