Cleaning out the SD card

I noticed I have a ton of folders and what nots in my SD card from previous roms, apps, etc. Are there any files/folders that are required to be on there before I start deleting them?

I have several file that I'm thinking of deleting so I would be interested hearing from the experts. I use a Mac and I know it adds files in Trashes/501. I've deleted these without any issues.

That depends on what apps you have. Some apps, like the weather channel, use the SDcard for a cache. I don't know of any folder that the phone itself uses. I've reformatted mine a couple of times in windows (through sprecovery) with no ill results.
