Constant data usage even when not touching phone

I am possibly too dumb to own this phone. Just got it, and honestly don't know much about phones period. I noticed that the little My Verizon Data widget is constantly going up but I have only used my phone to text 3 times throughout the entire day. Since 10am the data usage thing has jumped from 36.67mb to 55.51mb. Is this normal? Do I have a setting messed up or something? My plan says unlimited data but heck, I'm confused about that too because when my daughter upgraded they told her she could no longer be on our family unlimited plan and she now has a 3g data pkg or something.

Will someone please help me understand this stuff? :blink:

Do you have motocast synced? My razr did the same thing bugged the hell out of me.
