Constant freezes

My son has his phone freezing numerous times throughout the day and can't pinpoint the cause as it happens while doing different tasks. He has pulled the battery each time and rebooted to have it work for short periods before freezing up again. Is there a way to wipe the cache partition like the droidX or any other suggestions?

The only method I can think of off-hand is through bootstrap/safestrap (clockworkmod or applicable poisons) which are all root required changes to the phone.

Short of a factory reset... or uninstalling of apps... or root... I have no idea :(
Otherwise... Do a factory reset, root your phone and install safestrap and then uninstall all the bloatware...
