contact widget not alerting

Isn't the contact widget suppose to show that chosen contacts texts messages being sent to you? Or is it strictly a contact shortcut widget? It's not showing my contacts texts thru the widget....only the notification bar.

It shows social website updates but not text messages and e-mails
