contacts not syncing to gmail account

I have a Droid X. sync does not sync my contacts. It did seem to sync only the Account email addresses I've put on the phone, but nothing else. Is this normal?

Will this work better in September when the Droid X gets OS 2?

Where is there a manual that covers all this in a complete and understandable way from A-Z? Too new to exist it seems?

Are the contacts set to store to the phone or are they set to store under your gmail account.

how to determine that?

How do i a) determine that? b) set it if it is wrong?
I have no clue. In absence of a decent manual, I have just started using this phone.
